Before purchasing software there are a couple of simple things that you need to check to be sure that your computer can accommodate the new software.

One of the first things to check is the type of operating system that you use. This can be found (for pc’s) by going to the start button located at the bottom left of your screen. When you click on the start button, you will notice on the left hand side what operating system you are using. (i.e. windows 2000 professional, Windows ME, Windows XP, etc.) Another way to find out about your operating system is by clicking once on MY COMPUTER from the desktop. Next, right click and choose PROPERTIES. The window that appears will list your operating system and service packs that have been installed. The next thing to check is the RAM, which is listed on the same screen.

If the software you are seeking needs to be done via the internet, be sure that additional ports aren’t required to be opened in order for that program to run. If it does require additional ports, please contact Internet Services at 504/596-3064 (before purchasing the software) to be sure that we can accommodate your request.

Opening additional ports on the firewall is a security issue. We do not want the hackers, port scanners, etc. to be able to access our network or any individual school’s network. We prefer not to put our firewall or network at risk, if it can be avoided. Please understand our perspective as the manager of the firewall and filter. If we keep opening additional ports for everyone, why have a firewall for security? Just some simple points to take into consideration
